As men age, the prostate gland increases in size, causing urination symptoms, but this condition is common and treatable.
Is BPH the same diagnosis as prostate cancer?
The main difference between BPH and prostate cancer is the cell development and cell differentiation in the prostate. Untreated BPH can be a risk to prostate cancer. However, the lower urinary tract symptoms the person experience maybe similar.
What are the symptoms that BPH patients experience?
As men age, the prostate gland increases in size, causing increased pressure to the urinary tract, narrowing its passage of urine. During the initial stage, when the urinary bladder is still healthy, the release of urine may not be an issue. However, as the health of the urinary bladder starts to deteriorate, the process of urination starts to become unsmooth. Some patients do not experience any urination difficulty until they become sick and take anti-viral/antibiotics. The side effects of such medications cause urination difficulty. The symptoms that are most often seen are:
• Feeling of incomplete urination, like someone who has not urinated yet
• High frequency of urination
• Poor stream of urination
• Incontinence
• Hesitancy
• Excessive passage of urine at night
If these symptoms are not managed accordingly, the patient will develop secondary problems such as urinary tract infection, deterioration of kidney function, incontinence, or bladder stones.
How is BPH diagnosed?
The easiest way to screen for BPH is to perform a urine test. From a urine test, one is able to determine whether the person has contracted an infection in the bladder, check kidney function, and check Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. PSA is a protein that is produced from the prostate. Normal values range from 0-4. Once this level becomes high, the patient is at a risk for BPH or even prostate cancer. Another method of diagnosing BPH is by using a cystoscope to evaluate the health of the prostate and the urinary bladder.
When should one treat BPH?
If the patient is not experiencing symptoms that is debilitating, no treatment is needed. However, once the symptoms start to worsen or the function of the kidney starts to deteriorate, it is important that the patient seeks treatment. The uses of western medication to relieve symptoms, surgery, or radiation are not the only methods that can be used. Sometimes, these methods might worsen the existed symptoms or create undesired side-effects such as impotence. One of the most effective alternatives is the use of natural herbs to improve prostate health and kidney function.
What should I do to improve prostate health and kidney function?
1) Tonify the kidneys by decreasing salty foods
2) Increase consumption of zinc, pumpkin seeds, oysters, and nuts
3) Decrease consumption of alcohol and decrease habit of drinking cold beverages
4) Consume foods that are high in nutrition such as fruits and vegetables. Avoid cabbage, radish, and morning glory vegetables.
5) Increase intake of multivitamins
6) Strength muscles associated with the urinary tract such as Kegel exercises
7) Relax. Find ways to decrease and/or relieve stress.
