Cupping is a traditional form of Chinese medicine where cups are being placed on the skin and pressure is increased by using heat or a suction method. In some cases, herbal oil is applied onto the skin to easily move the cups. The cups stay in place for 5-15 minutes which purposely causes red and bruised skin with some blood congestion for further treatment. Although the skin color after removing the cups might look a little “scary” for a while but it does not hurt and will fade away after some time, depending on the strength and length of the therapy of course. The cups can also be adjusted to fit for patients with sensitive skin conditions. Bamboo, tile, and glass cups that all have different qualifications are the three common types of material used today. Bamboo cups which easily crack and leak have less suction whereas tile cups have good suction with smooth and mostly round edges. Glass cups are usually transparent so that the skin can be seen through, the skin color sometimes provides useful information for the doctor. As stated earlier, cupping uses heat to reduce the pressure in the glass bottle (or other types of bottles/cups). One method to create heat is “San Han”, a piece of alcohol soaked cotton is burned in the cup before the cupping so that a negative pressure is created. This is quite a spectacular but also a safe method. Another way is boiling cups in water which is normally used with bamboo cups. Usually the doctor will choose the cups that are suitable for you and your condition.
